What is laser birthmark removal?
Birthmarks fall into two broad groups. Pigmented birthmarks, such as café-au-lait spots, naevus of Ota or other brown, grey or blue patches, contain extra melanin. Vascular birthmarks, such as port-wine stains, are made of dilated blood vessels and look pink, red or purple. Each type needs a different laser.
For pigmented marks the doctor uses a pigment laser, such as a pico laser, to break up melanin so the body can clear it. For red marks a vascular laser such as Excel V targets the blood vessels. Treatment is repeated over a series of sessions, and the mark lightens a little more each time.

What are the results and recovery like?
After a pigment laser, the mark may look darker or slightly crusted for several days before it starts to fade.
