What are lip fillers?
Lip fillers are a non-surgical way to change the volume and shape of the lips using hyaluronic acid (HA), a gel similar to a substance found naturally in the skin. The doctor injects small amounts with a fine needle or cannula into the body of the lips, the lip border or the corners of the mouth, depending on whether you want more fullness, a clearer outline or better balance between the upper and lower lip.
Because HA attracts water, lip filler can also make the lips look smoother and more hydrated. What are the results and recovery like?
The lips look fuller immediately, but swelling is common and often makes them look larger than the final result for the first one to three days. Small bruises or tenderness at injection points can last up to about a week. The filler settles and softens over roughly two weeks, which is a good time to judge the outcome. Results vary with the product, the amount used and your metabolism, and typically last around 6–12 months, after which a smaller top-up can maintain the shape.
