What is fractional CO2 laser?
A CO2 laser removes thin columns of skin and heats the tissue around them. "Fractional" means the beam is split into thousands of microscopic points, so only a fraction of the skin is treated at a time and the untouched skin between the points speeds up healing. This gives much of the benefit of traditional resurfacing with shorter recovery.
As the skin heals, it produces new collagen and replaces damaged surface skin, which can soften acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores and sun damage. Fractional CO2 is one of the stronger resurfacing options. Depending on your skin, the doctor may suggest a gentler alternative such as Fraxel or RF microneedling, which usually means less downtime per session.

Who is a good candidate?
- Rolling or boxcar acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Enlarged pores and rough texture
- Sun-damaged or ageing skin
- Surgical scars or stretch marks
Fractional CO2 is not suitable with active acne or infection, a recent tan, during pregnancy, or if you have recently taken isotretinoin. Darker skin types have a higher risk of temporary pigmentation after treatment, so the doctor may use gentler settings or another option. People prone to keloids or cold sores should tell the doctor beforehand.

What is the recovery like?
Straight after treatment the skin feels hot and looks red, similar to sunburn. Over the next few days it may feel tight, look bronzed and then flake as new skin comes through. Most people are comfortable going out again after about three to seven days, depending on the depth used. Redness can linger for a few weeks. Gentle cleansing, a rich moisturiser and strict sun protection are essential, and results continue to improve for several months as collagen rebuilds.
How the treatment works
-
Consultation
The doctor analyses your skin, scars and skin type, then sets the laser depth and number of sessions.
-
Numbing
Numbing cream is applied for 30–40 minutes to reduce discomfort.
-
Laser treatment
The fractional laser is passed over the skin in sections, taking about 20–40 minutes.
-
Aftercare
A soothing cream is applied. Keep skin moisturised, avoid sun, makeup and saunas for several days, and do not pick flaking skin.
Tips for international patients
- Message us on WhatsApp with photos so the doctor can confirm whether CO2 or a gentler laser suits your skin.
- Plan at least five to seven days of light schedule after treatment before important events or photos.
- Avoid tanning for several weeks before and after, and pack a high-SPF sunscreen and hat.
- If you need several sessions, ask whether a gentler laser fits a short trip better.
Frequently asked questions
How many fractional CO2 sessions do I need?
Many people need three to five sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, especially for acne scars. The doctor will advise based on your skin.
What is the downtime after fractional CO2 laser?
Expect redness, tightness and flaking for about three to seven days, with some pinkness lasting a few weeks.
Does fractional CO2 laser hurt?
Numbing cream is applied first, so most people feel heat and prickling. The skin feels warm like sunburn for a few hours afterwards.
Is fractional CO2 laser safe for dark skin?
It can be used with care, but darker skin has a higher risk of temporary pigmentation. The doctor may adjust settings or suggest an alternative.
How long do fractional CO2 results last?
Improvements in scars and texture are long-lasting, though ageing continues. Sun protection helps maintain the result.
How much does fractional CO2 laser cost in Seoul?
The price depends on the area and number of sessions, so the doctor confirms it at consultation. See our acne scar & pore price list.
